ISAF Youth Worlds Am I missing something here
I’m confused. . .
Well, nothing new there then, I hear you say. . .
butno, bear withme on this. The Youth Worlds;had suitable winds to raceon two of the firstthreedays. Thenit was timeaccording to the official schedule to havea lay day. . . to restoretired bodies, regenerate the game plan and focus the mindon the lastfew days.
Hasno-one realised thatit’s traditional at all RS:XYouth Championships [and Olympicclass windsurfing regattasgenerally] to havegood racingconditionswhenone decides to havea layday. The ISAFVolvo Youth WorldChampionships is no exception.
Alongcamethe layday and the weather was wonderful. . . for racing. But NO. . . Everyone;relaxed and had some down-timeagain. I mean theyalready spent one day ashore due to the 30 knot winds and the event;was behindschedule. 60 nationshavesentteamsto thisevent;whichis the pinnacle of youth sailingand youth windsurfing. Second only to the Olympicsailingregatta. . . and of the first4 days, only 2 were spent racing. Now whenracingresumed on the fifth day (Wednesday),theydidn’t raceagain. So instead of having raced;on four of the fivedays, or eventhreeof the fivedays, theyare now down to only two of the fivedays. Can someone makesense of thisfor me? Shouldn’tlaydays be held in reserve for use if the regatta is behindschedule?
Well, one immediate answeris thatracingat youth sailing/windsurfing level is about more thanjust competition. It is a chance to meet yourpeer group from different nationsaroundthe world. To get to know how theythink, havefun together and go home witha broaderout look thanyou arrived with. Very praiseworthyideals. . . I’m sure, but nationssignedtheirteamsup to race. Mano a Mano for the gold medal and as a team for the covetedVolvo Trophy. Manyhavetrained for months, evenyears. Parents and sponsors haveinvested heavily, cashand personal time. Ideals mustbe livedup to. Pinnacleevents;havea reputationto live up to. The sailors camefirstand foremost to race. To do theirverybestand test themselves against the world’s best. Experienced racemanagers are on hand to take difficult decisions. . . such as forego the pleasuresof a layday. The Volvo brand standsfor excellence, longevity and robustness. In the face of whatever naturethrows at you, you are aboveall safe in a Volvo. . . and you are driving a winning brand.
Thischampionshiphas a lot to live up to. Maybe thistime, the wrong callwas made. Race website: http://www. isafyouthworlds. com/editions/2009/index. php
